Ideas for MEST 4

I am going to focus my ideas for MEST 4 on ''Martial Arts''.
I will be analysing and watching films where martial arts is used. Some one the films I will be looking at are The old and new Karate kid, and possibly point out some improvements and differences of the two films. I will look at older films and research on them.

A2 BLOG

Check list:

Ensure that you check your gmail account for blog updates and use this account regularly.

Get yourself a SCRIBD account (I recommend that you use the same name and password), this will be a very useful tool for publishing your work from word or powerpoint to the blog.

For example, if you wanted to present your planning for the mini CI and LP as a powerpoint you could upload and post it easily using the embed code WHICH YOU SIMPLY COPY.

Just make sure that when you have copied the code you are on the 'edit html' tab for blogger, not 'compose' and after pasting it into the post press return before publishing.

This blog will remain as a resource for revision BUT will not be regularly updated.

So ensure that you use the A2 blog instead.

NEW A2 June 2010

Welcome to the A2.

As you can see we are moving forward at pace into a new online working environment.

You should all have gmail accounts, youtube accounts and your own blogspots.

The next task for you is to ensure that you have registered as a follower of this blog and of course to comment to confirm that you have read this post. You should also become followers of each others blogs too and use the comment facility to peer assess.

Use your blog to build your research skills with links to useful sites.

In addition to gmail, blogspot and youtube you will need to make a scribd account so that you can post documents including word and powerpoint. This will be very useful when it comes to revision, essays and presentations.

Good luck!

Your Smartboard work

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Not quite six months after our lesson, i have posted the PowerPoint that failed to work yesterday below. I have decided to use your Smartboard work from yesterday's lesson in next Friday's lesson so i will post your work on the blog but we will be revisiting it in order to develop sophisticated answers to the questions. I will also suggest some model answers for you.

Have a good weekend, and good luck to those of you who have exams next week.

SUMMER TERM - WELCOME BACK

MEST 2

We have reached the end of the journey and it is now time to finish your MEST 2 productions.

You will get Tuesday's periods 1, 3 and 4 working and we will give you some time after school to complete your work  BUT THAT IS IT.

You will be submitting your work on Tuesday of next week and you should ensure that it all works technically by then.

You will also be submitting your EVALUATIONS and SUPPORTING MATERIALS on Tuesday so MUST bring all to the lessons between now and then. You evaluation should be PRINTED OUT with clear titling, references and your name.

Those who are not working on the iMacs for any period of time on Tuesday will have the opportunity to review their submission folder and ensure that it is up to scratch.

MEST 1

Work on MEST 1 will begin again in earnest on Friday so please ensure that you have read the document given to you before the holiday and watched some reality TV - Britain's Got Talent has of course just started and could provide you with part of your case study.

We will be working intensively on MEST 1 preparing you for the exam in June, if you miss lessons you will miss this preparation and may not be fully prepared.

A2

Those of you expecting to continue with the course in A2 are reminded that lessons will start on this course one week after the half term on the 15th of June so don't go booking a holiday if you want to be on the course as you may not be allowed back onto the course in September if you miss lessons this term.

Great Expectations

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Following our productive lesson today I want to make a few explicit points.

Firstly, well done. Most of you have realised that there is a lot of work to complete by 23rd March and you are making more effort to achieve a higher level.

Secondly, detentions will be held from 3:30pm on Friday's (unless we are not in school, then i will rearrange with you). This week everyone is expected to attend detention on the agreed day (apart from Hawwa). I know that you understand that you will be able to complete work during detention and so it will benefit you. However, in future i expect deadlines to be met and detentions avoided by everyone.

Thirdly, the homework that is due for Friday is as follows:
- Bring you supporting materials (you should be developing this consistently)
- Write up your rationales and include them in your supporting materials folder
- Write up/complete your self-assessment worksheet and bring to next lesson (12.03.10)

Finally, if you know you have work to complete you should be doing this in your own time. I want you to focus on planning and creating your web pages during our lessons. If you know you need to learn software in order to complete the tasks and you need support in how to do this please let us know.

Please email me if you know you need advice or need to notify me of anything related to your learning: rodell@brentford.hounslow@sch.uk

Thank you,

Miss O'Dell

Picture Edit

Well done all of you for the hard work you put in on your edits. Having looked through them all, it is clear that there is still some way to go for all of you. Sadly, we have no more time booked in the CLC but because the two weeks missed, I will endeavor to get you some more time to finish though it should be born in mind that this time will be after school and NOT in formal lesson time.

It is also mine and Miss O'Dell's expectation that you will have begun planning for your websites on paper and be ready to start developing these in class.

Enjoy your half term and if you need to consult me about your work I will be available at school on Tuesday and Wednesday of the holiday.

EDITING

Your editing time in the CLC is running out and I was a little surprised to discover that so far NO ONE has used the additional editing time I have negotiated for you on a Wednesday afternoon.

Come the end of this half term, you will be expected to have completed all editing and sound post production on your trailers.

Please make use of the time we are offering you or you will underachieve.

WEEBLY SITES

There's a bit of work to do to update your sites with all the research, development and previous work.

Here are the things you should have.

MEST 1

Analysis of Magazine front pages - this is what we started with - focus on media terminology relevant to print, representations, institutions amd audience.

Analysis of movie trailers - more than one, relevant to your production - focus on genre and narrative, media language relevant to film, audience

Case study - music industry, developing a strategy to promote a new band, focus on methods of music distribution and marketing using Social Networking Sites (SNS), viral marketing techniques. Research into: how new bands 'make it'. Your plan should involve research and your strategy.

Essay on Precious Poster - analysis of Precious poster applying semiotics and showing understanding of representation. What the poster conveys to an audience and how it does it?

Image analysis - Reebok poster - from work done in class on representation and construction of images, use of semiotics. Clear use of media terminology.

MEST 2

Research which informed your choices of film project and show development of ideas. Should be looking into similar budget genre films.

Pitch, synopis, script
Filming schedule, equipment list, location photographs, call sheets for each filming day
(some of this may be in the form of a presentation of your group's planned production)
Production diary using the blog facility.
Production stills (if you took any)

(see previous blog entry for detailed information on EVALUATION and expectations of your finished write up)

I am not expecting this overnight, but I am expecting it. Some of your have a way to go...

PLEASE COMMENT TO ENSURE THAT I KNOW YOU HAVE READ THIS

Week beginning January 18th

Last Friday.

After a very disappointing turnout for last Friday's lesson in which a number of you were challenged with an exam paper. We will need to complete an assessment this Friday. Please ensure that you attend.

With regard to the MEST 2 productions, I was disappointed to hear about some continuing difficulties with communication and consequent lack of filming. This is looking likely to threaten your grades unless addressed urgently and solved. If you know what footage you need to shoot, you simply have to plan and orginaise to shoot then do it. How hard can this be?

On the evaluation front.
Download the document below which gives you information on what is required from your evalutation and production research. It is long but very detailed and should help. Please read it carefully and work through it. I am expecting this to enhance greately what you have on your weebly sites and lead to well written and clearly documented research and evaluations.

Editing

I hope and trust that today's session in the CLC has revealed to you what additional shooting you need to do to complete your trailers and helped you think about structure.

As you will have noticed from the term plan we are very tight for time and you will be expected to work fast AND in your own time to complete the edits.

In addition of course you will be plannng and creating 3 website pages for your films promotion. Start researching this and writing up your research on the weebly as usual.

For homestudy you should all be continuing to document your productions as advised last week. From what I have seen on all of your weeblys this has not been done and there appears to be little research or evidence of your detailed planning and evaluation. It is in your own interests to have this documented as it will save time when it comes to writing your 1500 WORD evaluations.

Friday's lesson

All expected to attend.

SPRING TERM

Here is a draft of the spring term lesson schedule.

Please be aware that this is subject to change BUT also take not of the deadlines at the end of term for completion of MEST 2 coursework.

AS Media Spring Term DRAFT

Mr H

FRIDAY Lesson 8th of January

Only 6 students out of 11 attended.

Very disappointing!

As a result one group who were supposed to shoot this weekend will struggle as I have their camera!

You must ensure that you make it to every lesson. really the weather is not a valid excuse unless you live in the countryside and literally CANNOT get in. Otherwise your absence will be marked as such and you will threaten you grades.

I am also still awaiting promised emails from students regarding exam timetables.

I am also currently writing your targets and current assessments based on what I have observed from lessons, the practical work submitted in the form of shot footage monitoring of your weebly sites. These form the basis of my AS predictions.

It is therefore in your interest to ensure that you are up to date with all your work: trailers analysis, research into audiences for your prospective films, understanding of the importance of institutions, stroyboards and scripts, plans and schedule for production, production diary, paper edit for your trailers. evidence of all of these should be availble for me to look at on your weebly site.

WEATHER REPORT

LESSONS ARE ON TODAY.
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU ATTEND.

THOSE OF YOU PLANNING TO FILM THIS WEEKEND, DO NOT BE DAUNTED BY THE WEATHER.

You can use the weather to your advantage!

Think visually?
Think about night-time filming - snow helps give better lighting at night.
Think about the reasons why using snow might support your story-telling.
Think about the symbolism of snow, the connotations, how snow hides things, how snow makes blood easier to see, footprints, danger from ice etc.

Think about how beautiful the snow makes the world and what interesting images you can acquire.

Snow kills too!

Tuesday's lessons will be beginning editing in the CLC.
